Letter To Stakeholders

Since IBI’s inception, sustainability and accountability have been part of our DNA, and a cornerstone of our identity and corporate culture. Considering the environmental, social, cultural and governance impacts of projects is second nature to us. We are proud to have been early leaders and to demonstrate that IBI’s medium – designing smart and progressive built environments, including digital twins like our virtual Smart City Sandbox – has now become the message.

We pride ourselves on operating responsibly with a human touch, balancing what’s good for people and the planet with doing what’s best for the business, and prioritizing activities that can achieve both goals. We have integrated our long-term sustainability goals into our strategic direction proving it is possible to be profitable while maximizing the beneficial impact we have on the world and society.

Our work engages both urban and rural environments, presenting innumerable ways to do things better. For example, in our transportation practice, we regularly assess the efficiencies of transit and opportunities to improve vehicular movement. This includes evaluating how many cars could be removed from the road, assessing the environmental impact of various transit projects, and considering the related pollution impacts of various designs. As movement shifts from vehicles to public transportation, and is further improved by traffic management systems, we can forecast how these changes impact CO2 and NOx emissions and calculate the associated benefits.

In late 2020, we acquired the assets of Cole Engineering and bolstered IBI’s capabilities with complementary water sector consulting and advisory services, an important expertise to offer growing communities. We followed this in early 2021 with the acquisition of Peters Energy, an environmental services company focused on renewable energy projects. These two acquisitions were designed to advance our strategy and will propel us forward to a cleaner energy future.

With the work we have undertaken through 2020 on ESG initiatives, we are pleased to be positioning IBI to provide expanded standardized reporting in our 2022 report and beyond which will reference specific frameworks, and we will continue to refine and improve our disclosure and demonstrate our commitment to transparency, credibility and sustainability. To complement this, we will provide continuous training and awareness to our employees to ensure they always understand what is expected of them and we will continue to reward innovation, disruption and efficiency enhancements. We also plan to more closely align our ESG goals and commitments with those of our clients and stakeholders and provide direct and transparent ties between them.

IBI is well positioned to drive the next wave of our growth. Our strength and positive historical performance is a testament to the dedication of all of our employees and their efforts to live our vision to be the global partner to plan, design and sustain the cities of tomorrow.
